Obituary

Yanceyville, NC - If I can help somebody as I travel along the way…

Prentice, in his own unique way personified a true willingness to help others.

Prentice Randal Graves, 36 years old, was born on June 8th 1984 to the union of Kenneth and Virginia Garland Graves. He joined his older brother, Kent Nicolas in the Graves family, and developed an inseparable brotherly bond. He departed this life suddenly on Friday, July 31st, 2020 in Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Prentice was baptized in 1994. He became a member of Bible Way Cathedral in Danville, Virginia, where he sang in the Young Adult Choir.

Prentice attended Bartlett Yancey High School. Where he played football in 2000 and received an award for dedication and hard work.  After his graduation from Bartlett Yancey in 2002, he continued his education at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in Construction Management in 2007.

Prentice worked for the Highway Department in Greensboro for several years, before becoming a train conductor for eight years for Norfolk Southern Railroad.

Prentice loved being outdoors. Prentice enjoyed hunting deer, fishing, grading and clearing land, cutting down trees, trimming trees, cutting wood, mowing grass and all other tasks in reference to the outdoors.

Prentice was often seen walking in the yard and on the land looking around to see what needed to be cleared, fixed, cut, repaired, and moved away.

Prentice was an amazing son. Prentice told his dad he loved to work. Prentice was a hard worker. He worked entirely too hard. Prentice wanted to help his family and he did all the time. He was a humble son, kind, loyal, dependable, caring, and dedicated to work and helping his family and the people in the community, if he could.

Prentice will be missed tremendously. We all love Prentice. Prentice was truly a special son. He was his mother’s youngest son and cared for his mother, as the best sons do for their mothers. He watched over her and protected her. We will sorely miss Prentice, every minute of the day, but God is our all and all, and we will continue to believe and trust God.

Prentice was proceeded in death by his paternal grandparents, Reverend Thomas Graves and Mrs. Annie Watlington Graves; and maternal grandfather, Mr. Earl Garland.

God looked upon Prentice and requested his company. Prentice leaves to cherish his memory: a son, Sterling Graves, of Danville, VA; parents, Mr. Kenneth and Mrs. Virginia Graves, of Yanceyville, NC; a brother Kent Graves, of Deltona, FL; a sister Katie White, of Burlington, NC; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Margaret Garland of Yanceyville, NC; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
